Despite its impressive length — nearly 800 pages! — this is still a rather whirlwind tour of Russian history. After all, the Romanovs ruled the country for over 3 centuries, and any one of the tsar or tsarina’s lives would make for an interesting book alone.

My generally rosy view of all things français must obviously color my perception of this first book in Mayle’s Provence series. Reading it was something like enjoying a particularly luxurious meal, set in 12 courses (a chapter for each month of the year).

Overall I think this is a pretty fun and honest graphic memoir that would be a good pick for any foodie reader, as well as folks who are interested in trying out a nonfic comic.
