Zombies, Run!

November 18, 2016 Wellness 6

For the past 12 weeks I’ve been participating in an exercise study being done by a local university. The study involved an app-based exercise program called “Zombies, Run!”

The app itself is free, up to a certain extent. For example, you can only download 1 new mission per week with the free version. They also have a 5k training app that is supposed to be very much like the Couch to 5K program, but I haven’t tried it.

What makes “Zombies, Run!” different from other exercise apps? The storyline. Essentially, you’re a character in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested landscape — a character who is tasked with fetching supplies or rescuing people, hence all the running from zombies you’ll have to do. Each chapter of the story is a called a mission, which will typically last from about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your settings. When you’re not listening to the story or running from zombies, you can listen to your own heart-pumping music to keep you going.

Let me be clear: I’m not really theĀ running type. The only reason I started doing this program was for that whole experiment thing. But I’m really glad that I started it! Despite some serious issues with shin splints in the beginning, and quite a bit of laziness if I’m being honest… I’ve managed to up my endurance a little bit and I just generally feel a little bit more confident in my body right now. Which is good, yes?

I’ll probably keep going with this app even after the exercise study is finished with me. However, I’m also open to alternatives. I also use the yoga.com app, which I got for free during a promotion they were doing last year. And I have a FitBit, though to be honest I haven’t worn it very often lately because I’ve had some trouble getting it to sync up properly.

ANYWAY, what I want to know is: Do you have a favorite exercise app or program? Have you ever done this kind of interval training to meet a running goal, like doing a 5k?
